Our first trip to Japan. My big hair tells you it was in the 80's! John worked for American Airlines and, back in the day, if you wanted to non-rev, guys had to wear a suite and tie and ladies were in dresses, stockings and heels. :)

What's so great about Japan?

Japan was recently named the world's favorite travel destination for the third consecutive year by Condé Nast Traveler readers and I know why. John and I took our first trip to Japan in 1987 – and we immediately fell in love with the people, the culture, the history and the natural beauty if this island nation. Japan is one of those destinations that keeps surprising you in the best way. It offers the perfect balance of easy travel, rich culture, and just the right amount of adventure.

Below is some interesting information on the various cities and best things to see and do. We think the very best way to tour Japan is from a cruise ship (you knew I was going to say that, right?).

Because Japan is such an in-demand destination, we put together a cruise group on Explora Journeys (new ultra-luxury cruise line) newest ship- Explora III- sailing Oct 16, 2027- Oct 26, 2027. Explora III - with only 926 passengers - is often described as an exquisite boutique European hotel that just happens to be a ship. Itinerary details and how to sign up are at the end of this article so keep reading!

You can spend one day exploring Tokyo’s lively neighborhoods and historic Asakusa district, then head to Kyoto to wander through peaceful temples, beautiful gardens, and the famous bamboo grove in Arashiyama. Nara gives you a slower pace with its gentle paths, ancient temples, and friendly deer.

There are also plenty of memorable things to do that don’t feel tiring. You might watch a sumo match in Tokyo, enjoy a traditional tea ceremony, take a scenic ride through the countryside, or relax in a hot spring in Hakone. In Kyoto, a stroll through the lantern-lit streets of Higashiyama can feel like stepping into another era. And if you want something a little different, places like Kanazawa, Fukuoka, and Takayama offer a more relaxed feel with beautiful gardens, local food, and charming old-town streets.

Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima each add something special to a Japan itinerary. Hiroshima offers a moving look at history, but it also feels hopeful and vibrant today, with beautiful parks, river views, and easy day trips to places like Miyajima. Nagasaki stands out for its unique blend of Japanese, Chinese, and European influences, making it a fascinating city to explore for both its history and its scenery. Farther south, Kagoshima has a more relaxed, warm-weather feel, with striking views of Sakurajima volcano, peaceful gardens, and a laid-back pace that many travelers love. Together, these cities show a side of Japan that is meaningful, scenic, and memorable.

If Japan is on your bucket list (and it should be) and you’d like to sail on a small, exquisite ship with a crew that will treat you like royalty and fabulous food- listen up. This is your sign. Explora Journeys has several fascinating itineraries. Here is the one we have a group discount on:
